I’ve always been intrigued by the place where science and technology intersect with humanity, and I’ve always loved a good story! I come by it naturally. My dad was a consummate storyteller - a brilliant university professor who taught the history of American technology. From the time I was a little girl, he encouraged me to examine, explore and question the world around me. He understood both technology’s promises, and its perils.
I spent much of my career as a TV news journalist - pen-poised and camera-ready: hunting down a good story, finding its unique “angle” and sharing it with the world. At this time in history, I believe that many of our most compelling and important stories have some sort of breakthrough science or emerging technology angle to explore. Science and tech touch virtually every aspect of human experience – from our jobs and information ecosystems, to our most intimate health decisions and relationships. AI and neural networks, blockchain, the spatial web, nanoscience and so much more – these will be the instruments with which my 3 daughters’ generation will write the stories that fill history’s next chapter. I believe in inspiring girls to shape the future. I want them to assert their rightful place in STEM and STEAM professions. I want them to learn from female trailblazers, and to know that women’s voices are essential to the narrative.
Today, I oversee business development strategy for a premiere immersive media company, helping enterprises understand how they can tap into the power of virtual and augmented reality. Each day, I drive to work through North Carolina's Research Triangle Park -a hub of tech companies and major research universities who are pushing the frontiers of human ingenuity. I'm continually reminded why this podcast is so important! Whether you’re commuting to work or a workout, dropping your kids off at school, making a grocery run, or just looking for some intelligent conversation in a quiet moment, my goal is to help us all better understand the science & tech innovations that are shaping our world, informing our decisions, & driving our future.
My sweet and wise dad would have been amazed at the way his granddaughters hold the entirety of human knowledge (and several dozen TikTok dance videos) in a device that fits the palm of their hands. I’m still trying to figure it all out! I celebrate the women who are helping us to make sense of it, and applaud them for leveraging their enormous talents for the greater good. And, I thank you for joining Vanessa and me on this journey into the future. Hold on; I promise it'll be an epic ride!
